| For many years, science
fiction has been more than an entertainment, or even a branch of literature. It has
stimulated its readers to learn not only about science, but about the whole world. It has
also brought together people of similar wide-ranging interests, wherever it is read.
Through such gatherings we have had the opportunity to meet foreign friends both in our
own country and abroad. We have found it true that "a stranger is a friend you have
not yet met." |

| Now Contact has taken on the
same international character. Although it derives partly from science fiction, it also
draws on real science. As you know, its founder, James Funaro, is an anthropologist.
Participants have included scientists of almost every kind, as well as engineers, artists,
writers, teachers, students, and others who are simply interested. We ourselves have been
active in it since its early years and seen it grow from humble beginnings, through
occasional difficulties, to its present position. We hope this growth and improvement will
continue. Your own organization certainly shows that it has gained attention and interest
outside its country of origin. |

What made this happen? Well,
we need hardly tell you. The creation and exploration of imaginary worlds is fun!

| It is also a process of
learning. A Contact project uses the laws and facts of science, the principles of logic,
and human intuition to guide the imagination. The game players always find surprises,
because of the number of different minds who consider the possibilities and contribute
information from their own knowledge. This can contribute to one's understanding the
workings of the universe. That makes it sound like a classroom, though, and it is not: it
is a playground of the mind, where we meet new friends and learn new games. |

| Dr. Funaro has also always
intended the Contact game as a way of teaching. Calling on a wide variety of disciplines,
astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, geology, anthropology, and much more, a Contact
project challenges people to learn about these subjects and helps them see how everything
in the world is related to everything else. Several National Aeronautics and Space
Administration scientists Who are concerned with improving science education in the U. S.
were at the most American recent meeting, in March. They have, to quote Dr. Funaro, given
a firm, clear vote of confidence and support to Contact. The two alien-building teams
whose creatures made first contact with each other at this meeting were a group of
teachers and a superintendent from a high-school north of Sacramento, who have now
committed themselves to developing Cultures of the Imagination as a school curriculum.
They have learned it is a way to bring fun into the classroom. |

As for the two of us, the
meeting will be an exceptionally rewarding experience. Not only will we be playing with
yet another imaginary alien world, we will actually be visiting a real-life society here
on Earth which has fascinated both of us for years yet which we know will be filled with
the unexpected from the moment we arrive. There will be so much to learn！
