| When the Japanese
team at the World Science Fiction convention, Confrancisco, presented the "pickup
bear" aliens from the star system of Epsilon lndi, we were excited by the
sophisticated work we saw. We appreciate the effort required to populate alien worlds in a
way that is logical and consistent. Like us, the designers in Japan worked as free time
was available to them after their other professional and educational commitments. This is
real dedication. |

world-builders will have their first opportunity to experience a weekend together
dedicated to this creative exercise. We sincerely hope that the participants will find the
face-to-face context of the convention stimulating and richly rewarding. We also hope that
this will become an annual event in Japan as it has in the U.S. Each year we find new
ideas to explore and, in the process, learn a little more about ourselves as human beings. |

| An annual CONTACT
Japan conference will bring us a step closer to creating a new cultural bridge between
world-builders in Japan and in America. It will give people in both countries an
opportunity to know each other better by examining how we approach the problem of
communication between species. We hope that people in other countries will eventually join
us in this exercise. |

| As we continue to
refine our skills in this area and to create detailed models of hypothetical worlds, we
could even consider entering into the spirit of these worlds and attempting to communicate
between them as if we were "aliens." It is our conviction that CONTACT offers
the best avenue for understanding and appreciating cultural differences between people on
this planet, while simultaneously preparing us for what might be the greatest encounter in
our recorded history -- an actual meeting with representatives from another world. |
